Welcome to one of the most traditional houses of one of the most traditional ethnic groups in Sabah.
When you ask (most) Malaysians about longhouses, they will (almost certainly) refer you to Sarawak. The longhouse lifestyle stereotypically conjures the images of the Ibans, Bidayuhs or Penans – main ethnic groups from the state of Sarawak. And unlike Sarawak, most ethnic groups in Sabah do not live in longhouses. So, it is almost safe to make such loose statement until one comes across the very unique tribe in Sabah, residing in the unique communal-style longhouses – the Rungus people!
Visit the Bavanggazo Village (Malay: Kampung Bavanggazo), located in the town of Kudat (a three-hour drive north of Kota Kinabalu) to experience this fascinating communal lifestyle of the Rungus people. The Rungus are an ethnic group of Sabah with their own distinctive language, costumes, architecture and customs.
Get a taste of real Rungus living through their food, daily rituals and music!
